Light Rail and Public Transport Expansion
I fully support Canberra’s shift towards faster, more sustainable transport options, especially in underserved areas like the south. However, large investments like Light Rail Stage 2 must be approached with complete transparency and accountability.
There are concerns about the lack of transparency in costs and timelines for Light Rail projects. Any major infrastructure investment of this scale must undergo a rigorous, evidence-based cost-benefit analysis to ensure it delivers long-term value for Canberra, considering financial, environmental, and social impacts.
Importantly, we cannot pit Light Rail expansion against other essential priorities like healthcare, education, and community infrastructure. A balanced approach ensures strategic attention to addressing all areas of public spending.
As planning for Light Rail Stage 2B continues, I will advocate for full transparency in procurement, project timelines, and integration with the broader public transport network. This also includes improving governance and enforcing stronger legislative scrutiny to ensure accountability at every step. Expanded active transport infrastructure—footpaths, bike lanes, and shared paths—must support urban densification along the Light Rail corridor.
Extending the Light Rail network to Canberra Airport should also be prioritised, given its benefits for residents, workers, and tourists—and the economy. At the same time, we must innovate and expand bus services and active transport networks to build an integrated, sustainable system.
With current budget constraints, it’s necessary to reassess whether the current Light Rail plans are the best option for Canberra. My decisions will be based on thorough analysis of long-term benefits and costs, informed by community input, expert advice, and a commitment to our city’s future.
Voluntary-Assisted Dying (VAD)
I believe every Canberran should have the right to a dignified death, even when they lose the ability to make decisions or communicate. If a person has made a clear, voluntary directive while they had capacity, indicating their wish to access Voluntary-Assisted Dying, that decision must be respected. This is about giving people control over their end-of-life choices and safeguarding their dignity and personal will. It's time we stand up for a compassionate, humane approach that puts people and their families first. I hope a clear majority of incoming MLAs will join me in delivering this critical right to our community.
