MEET SARA
Sara Poguet has called Canberra home for over 25 years and is a proud resident of the Inner South. Sara wants to ensure that no one is left behind in her electorate and believes that every voice needs to be heard to strengthen our community and enrich the quality of life for every Canberran.
Sara began volunteering with the well-known and respected RSPCA at a very young age. Then she travelled to volunteer in an orphanage in Bali, assisting with raising, caring for, and educating the children.
Sara has seen firsthand the issues that affect our most vulnerable. Her fierce commitment to community, mental health advocacy, and supporting Canberra's most vulnerable has driven Sara to volunteer her time full-time to run as a candidate for Independents for Canberra.
Sara has extensive background in not-for-profit, community and customer service, leadership and small business. She is also a mother to her 5 year old son, Kai, who is part of the public education system. Sara is focused on using her voice and platform to advocate for change.

Positions on Key Issues:
Light Rail: I support continuing the design and planning process for light rail, but let’s be clear: any decision to move forward with construction must be transparent, fact-based, and fully consider all the information available. Light rail has the potential to be a transformative city-shaping project, not just a transport solution. Its real value lies in unlocking new, well-located housing, vibrant community spaces, and commercial opportunities that can reshape our city for the better.
However, we must be honest about the costs and purpose of light rail. This isn’t just about moving people from A to B; it’s about shaping Canberra’s future. If we’re going to build it, we need to clearly demonstrate how it will be funded and ensure that the financials stack up. Open-eyed, transparent decision-making is crucial, and our community deserves to know exactly what they’re getting and how it’s going to be paid for.
Voluntary-Assisted Dying (VAD): I support Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD). I firmly believe that individuals should have the right to access VAD in situations where they’ve lost decision-making capacity or the ability to communicate, provided they have previously made a clear, voluntary directive expressing this choice while they still had capacity. I hope that the next Legislative Assembly will support more progressive VAD legislation, so Canberrans facing a terminal illness can choose a dignified and compassionate end on their own terms.
