MEET NATHAN
Nathan is a dedicated Canberra resident who is deeply passionate about our city's future. With a distinguished career in the Federal Public Service in areas including economics, transport and health, Nathan is eager to bring his experience and passion to advocating for policies that prioritise the wellbeing and prosperity of all Canberra residents.
Transparency and accountability in government actions are non-negotiable for Nathan. He is committed to holding the government to a high standard, ensuring that every decision serves the community, not vested interests or political agendas.
Nathan holds a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, a postgraduate certificate in Data Analytics, and a Masters of Business Administration. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Denman Prospect.
WHAT NATHAN STANDS FOR:
A key pillar of Nathan’s campaign is his unwavering dedication to transparency and accountability in government. He believes that the decisions made by the ACT government should serve the interests of the community, rather than being influenced by political agendas or vested interests. He is committed to holding the government to the highest standards, ensuring that decisions are made with the best interests of Canberra’s residents in mind. His belief in transparency stems from his extensive public service background, where he has seen firsthand the need for governments to be open, responsive, and responsible.
Nathan’s dedication to addressing key issues such as public housing and public transport is clear. His observations on the public housing crisis—where over 3,000 people are waiting for a place to live, with some waiting up to five years—illustrate his deep concern for those most affected by government inaction. His personal experience in Murrumbidgee, where communities have been let down by planning delays and broken promises, only strengthens his resolve to push for better outcomes.
Nathan is focused on fixing Canberra's healthcare system, with a priority on reducing emergency wait times, an issue he’s experienced personally. He’s determined to ensure that all Canberrans get faster and more reliable access to healthcare when they need it.
What sets Nathan apart is his commitment to truly listen to the community. His candidacy is not motivated by political ambition, but by a genuine desire to make Canberra a better place for all its residents. As a father of two, he is particularly focused on creating a city where future generations can thrive. Nathan’s decision to run as an independent speaks to his belief in the power of collaboration and integrity. He recognises that the traditional party system often falls short in addressing the real concerns of the people. By aligning with Independents for Canberra, Nathan is part of a movement guided by principles of integrity, collaboration, and accountability—values that seem to have been lost in the broader political landscape. His refusal to be boxed into any one ideology reflects his commitment to addressing issues based on their merit, not political gamesmanship.
Nathan is not just another candidate—he is a leader driven by empathy, pragmatism, and a clear sense of purpose. His background, combined with his passion for community-driven solutions, makes him an ideal candidate to represent Murrumbidgee.
POSITIONS ON KEY ISSUES:
Transport and Light Rail:
I support the expansion of Canberra’s light rail network, in principle. A well planned and cost-effective light rail network can play a crucial role in improving public transport and reducing traffic congestion.
However, I believe that large infrastructure projects like this must be managed better and with full transparency. This includes better community consultation and oversight. I’m particularly concerned about the way this project has been handled, especially regarding its significant delays, and its impact on other transport options for the rest of Canberra (areas that aren't going to see the tram for decades).
I’m hearing from Murrumbidgee residents, and experienced it myself, that alternate transport options are being neglected and unfairly impacted. A large number of important services have been taken away (e.g. the Xpresso and school buses) when priority was given to those traveling to the city from the town centres, but not to anywhere else. In conjunction with supporting the light rail extension, I will push for the extension of bus routes and more frequent and direct services (reducing the need for multiple changes), especially during off-peak hours. This will ensure that residents in all parts of Canberra have reliable access to public transport.
Voluntary-Assisted Dying (VAD):
I support VAD as a compassionate and dignified option for those experiencing unbearable suffering at the end of life. It is essential that any framework we adopt has strong safeguards in place to ensure it is respectful, safe, and accessible, with appropriate medical and ethical oversight.
