Accepting the below indicates you have read, understood and will abide by this Code of Conduct in full.

Independents for Canberra (IFC) greatly values the contribution of everyone who offers their time and effort as we work together to build a more just and compassionate community. To assist in providing a safe and positive environment, all volunteers, staff and candidates are asked to follow this Code of Conduct.

Political activities and campaigns can be terrific experiences. But people’s passion for politics can also lead to difficult interactions, whether internally or with other members of our community. Different opinions and points of view are encouraged! It’s a big part of why we are ‘independents’. Treating all views and all community members with respect and openness is critical to our individual and collective success.

Agreement

All volunteers, staff and candidates should be aware of the needs and welfare of others and treat everyone in ways that are positive and protective. Leaders have additional responsibilities to care for people and model this to others. Volunteers, staff and candidates agree to uphold our shared ethos, behaving in ways that are inclusive and kind, just and compassionate, honest and accountable, optimistic and aspirational. By signing below, you agree to:

Prioritise listening when interacting with members of our community.
Always work in the best interests of others and set a positive example.
Issue and follow reasonable directions.
Respect the law while undertaking activities for IFC.
Model healthy relationships and communication, make decisions impartially, manage any conflicts of interest and ensure you do not misuse any actual or perceived power.
Authorise IFC to take and use photographs/videos of you at events or during campaigning activities for use in newsletters, articles, social media, on the website and in other materials.
Acknowledge your involvement does not grant you any licence, interest or ownership rights in material generated by or for IFC (including brands, images, designs, logos and slogans).
Undertake to keep all confidential information secure, including internal IFC documents, systems, personal information and contact details.

Respect for others

Volunteers, staff and candidates agree to:

Treat everyone with courtesy, honesty and fairness, taking care to respect the interests, rights, beliefs and welfare of others.
Actively promote cultural safety and inclusion.
Be respectful and inclusive by embracing diversity including age, cultural background, sexual orientation, language, disability, religion, gender or any other status.
Assist in creating an environment free of fear, harassment, racism or exploitation. • Resolve interpersonal conflict with humility, kindness, courage and forgiveness.
Avoid gossip and seek assistance from appropriate leaders and/or the IFC Executive promptly if support is required to resolve issues.

Communication

When engaging with others, volunteers, staff and candidates agree to:

Use positive, inclusive, respectful, non-judgmental and non-offensive language;
Respect any boundaries people may have regarding their personal space. Take care not to intimidate or cause discomfort to others.
Maintain confidentiality and the privacy of personal information and contact details of others, except where it is mandatory, appropriate and/or protective to disclose them (see ‘required reporting’ below).
Use electronic resources appropriately, only accessing content and communicating in ways that are safe, legal, non-exploitative, considerate, and in line with the goals of IFC.

Safety

Volunteers, staff and candidates meet safety responsibilities by:

Working safely, observing any local safety procedures and seeking to protect the health and safety of others.
Working within their ability.
Reporting any safety hazard or hazardous practice they observe, and any safety incidents.
Not taking or sharing any photographs of children without the consent of the supervising person, the parents/carers, and where age-appropriate, the child.
Listening carefully, and calmly addressing issues with the goal of finding resolution.

Prohibited conduct

Volunteers, staff and candidates must not:

Steal, make false or misleading statements, bully, or act violently towards others.

Required reporting

Volunteers, staff and candidates must as soon as possible:

Report any actual or apparent breaches of law, policy, or this Code of Conduct, to the appropriate person in relation to the issue, or to a member of the IFC Executive.
Report any allegation of inappropriate conduct, or any concern, allegation, disclosure or abuse to the IFC Executive.
Notify the IFC Executive immediately if they become the subject of an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), or of a reportable child offence allegation or conviction.
Declare and manage any conflict between personal interests and IFC roles.

Breaches of the Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct sets out the minimum expectations for all volunteers, staff and candidates. A breach of this Code will result in action proportional to the conduct involved and the role(s) of the volunteer, staff member or candidate. The matter may be reported to the relevant leadership, and a range of actions taken to address the matter, such as a change to duties, or withdrawal of the relevant role(s).

IFC’S TEN CORE PRINCIPLES

Every voice is heard:
We will engage proactively with Canberrans from all walks of life, striving for a Territory where nobody is ignored or left behind.
No vested interests:
We will base our decisions solely on the needs of our communities.
Empowering locals:
We will support and invest in new and existing local initiatives, especially community organisations and small businesses.
Accessibility:
We will be active participants in community life and will prioritise genuine and ongoing direct contact with constituents.
Hard work:
We will fight for the ACT and do all we can to deliver results for Canberrans, making ourselves available and accountable to our communities from the first day of our campaign to the last day of our term.
Integrity:
We will speak the truth, follow through on our commitments and admit to any mistakes.
Long-term thinking:
We will look beyond the election cycle, promoting long-term thinking and actions in line with securing a better future for the Territory.
Evidence-based policy:
Our policies will be based on information from the electorate, developed through sourcing best-available evidence and expertise and, when available information changes, our minds and policy platforms will change accordingly.
Collaboration:
We will work constructively with each other and with other MLAs whenever possible.
Independence:
We will operate and vote as independents, remaining free to disagree.
