It’s time to get back to putting people first. No party politics. No vested interests. No fringe agendas.
Real representative democracy, the way it’s supposed to be.
We’re tired of politicians who prioritise the party line over the views of their constituents, governments that serve vested interests rather than addressing their community's needs, and policy that ignores evidence in favour of political power trading.
We’ve had enough and we’ve decided to do something about it. That’s why we’re backing community independents at the 2024 ACT Election.
The problem? Conventional party candidates are selected then elected through party-based preferences. Most of the power resides with a very small number of people.
As a result, it’s been 26 years since we last elected an independent to the Legislative Assembly.
So we've formed a 'party' of community independents to level the playing field.
Grouping independents together gives us our own column on the ballot paper and makes working collaboratively a key element of our approach, maximising our ability to deliver tangible results for our community.
How did we get here? In early 2024, two Canberra locals with family histories on opposing sides of politics came together to kickstart this movement. Having lost faith in the major parties, Thomas Emerson and Clare Carnell teamed up to offer the ACT a new way forward in the form of Independents for Canberra.
The movement immediately grew beyond its founders, attracting passionate Canberrans from diverse backgrounds who were all saying the same thing; it’s time for change.
