ABOUT US

Independents for Canberra is a volunteer-led, community-driven political movement that endorses and supports community independents to run for office at ACT Elections.

Independents for Canberra’s objective is to help foster community empowerment. It is a grassroots movement that backs locals to deliver the change their communities want to see in the Legislative Assembly. We want better political representation focused on a genuine contest of ideas based on evidence, listening to the community and bringing people together, rather than divisive party lines.

OUR PRINCIPLES

Candidates endorsed by Independents for Canberra commit to following these 10 principles.

1. Every voice is heard: Striving to ensure nobody gets ignored or left behind.

2. No vested interests: Basing decisions solely on the needs of our communities.

3. Empowering locals: Supporting local initiatives, businesses and community organisations.

4. Accessibility: Prioritising direct contact with the residents of our electorates, and being active participants in community life. 

5. Hard work: Fighting for the ACT with unflagging energy and a focus on delivering results.

6. Integrity: Following through on commitments, being accountable to community and admitting to any mistakes.

7. Long-term thinking: Looking beyond the election cycle, taking actions for a better present and future.

8. Evidence-based policy: Grounding policy in evidence and updating positions when new evidence emerges.

9. Collaboration: Working constructively with other candidates and MLAs whenever possible.

10. Independence: Operating and voting as genuine independents, remaining free to disagree with others.
