I want to extend my deepest gratitude to you, and all supporters of Independents for Canberra, for your unwavering commitment, energy and belief in a movement that is truly people-driven. Together, we have made history!
On 19 October, with your support, Thomas Emerson was elected to represent our values and vision in the ACT Legislative Assembly for the next four years.
Despite having not existed just nine months ago, Independents for Canberra picked up a whopping 8.5% of the primary vote across the ACT, precipitating swings against all three major parties. In Kurrajong, where Thomas was elected, the proportion was 13.7%, including 10% for Thomas himself – higher than the Leader of the Greens, Shane Rattenbury, and the Health Minister, Rachel Stephen-Smith. The result for Independents for Canberra in Kurrajong is the second-highest independent vote in the history of the territory (Paul Osborne earned 16.2% of the primary vote in Brindabella in 1998).
The territory-wide independent vote topped the ACT Greens’ vote! You can check out Thomas’ election night interview reacting to the result here.
Our results compared with other ACT independents
This victory is clearly more than just the election of a candidate. It represents the power of community voices over politics as usual, and the power to get behind people standing as independents. It shows that by coming together, we can break through the noise and send a clear message: Canberrans deserve independent, transparent, and accountable leadership.
From the tireless volunteers who door-knocked and letterboxed in every corner of Canberra, to those who worked behind the scenes, and to those who believed in the possibility of something better – this victory belongs to all of us.
The media has recognised what we’ve known all along; Canberra is ready for change. The stories of how everyday people, like all of our amazing candidates, helped shape this movement have inspired so many. Together, we are leading a new chapter in our city’s political landscape – one where decisions are made for our community, by our community.
It is still a bit too early to know what the results might be in the seat of Yerrabi, and David Pollard remains an outside (though admittedly small) chance to join Thomas in the Assembly. For now, let’s take a moment to celebrate what we’ve accomplished together!
What's next?
Next Tuesday (29 October), we are hosting a get-together at the Dickson Taphouse from 6.30pm to 8pm. This casual gathering is for any and all interested supporters to discuss the results and what’s next.
If you’re keen to remain involved, please do come along as there’ll be plenty of opportunities to do so!
Thank you, once again, for believing in the Independents for Canberra and for being part of this incredible journey. This is just the beginning – the beginning of making sure Canberra is a place where everyone’s voice is heard.
Thank you all,
Leigh
