Many people don't know that the Chief Minister we've had for the last 10 years has also been the Treasurer for over 13 years.
We've been hearing concerns from people in our community - from various different sectors - about the concentration of power in the Chief Minister's office.
Yesterday we gave voice to those concerns by calling for a separation of powers between the Chief Ministry and Treasury.
Democracy thrives on an open contest of ideas where a multitude of perspectives are included in the public debate. We all know the consolidation of power in too few hands is not a good thing, and it's difficult to see how our Chief Minister and Treasurer being the same person isn't an example of that.
Perhaps knowing this, the Chief Minister declared four years ago that he would hand over the Treasury portfolio within this term of government. But he hasn't.
We're calling for that change to happen following the election in October.
You can find some of the media commentary on our position here, here and here.
It's time for change!
