Following six community town hall meetings across the ACT and dozens of expressions of interest from potential candidates, new political entity Independents for Canberra has reached the final stage of its candidate endorsement process.
Potential candidates who have passed successfully through an initial vetting and interview process will now be given the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community at one of three upcoming town hall events.
Brindabella – Sun 28 April 4-6pm – Tuggeranong Community Centre, Greenway
Kurrajong & Murrumbidgee – Tue 30 April 6-9pm – The Polish Club, Turner
Ginninderra & Yerrabi – Thu 2 May 6-9pm – Holy Covenant Anglican Church, Cook
Each candidate will deliver a brief speech followed by questioning from the audience.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend and ask questions to provide input into which candidates are endorsed to run under the Independents for Canberra banner.
The party’s secretary and potential candidate for Kurrajong, Thomas Emerson, said he was excited by the variety of candidates who had put their hands up.
“When we launched this movement a couple of months ago, we were hoping a diverse mix of people would step forward and commit themselves to being part of the change we need in the ACT. That’s exactly what’s happened.
“We’re hearing that Canberrans are tired of the traditional political model. They’re sick of ‘the politics’ getting in the way of the truth. They want politicians to take meaningful action on issues that affect their lives, rather than occupying themselves with political point scoring.
“We’re already feeling a real groundswell of support for this movement across the city. People see independents as the way forward.”
